Our Story

The story of “Street to School” (S2S) is one of passion, compassion, and hope, rooted in the vision of our beloved founder, Billa Mahmud. Though S2S officially began in 2017, its heart beats with the principles Billa established long before, driven by his deep love for the children of La.

Billa’s journey started humbly beneath a mango tree, where he welcomed just five students—one of whom is now our dedicated Operations Manager, Coach Bobby. A lifelong resident of La Township, Billa was a teacher and clothing trader, but above all, he was a champion for the youth in his community, tirelessly working to uplift those facing adversity.

With an unwavering commitment to providing opportunities for self-development, Billa harnessed the power of football and sports to engage local youth, believing that education should always come first. As the word spread about his free tuition and playtime, families flocked to him, entrusting him with their children’s futures. Billa, ever resourceful, self-funded relocations to accommodate this growing need, eventually establishing the Future Leaders UCC in Teshie.

Billa was a man of strong principles, convinced that meaningful change starts at the grassroots level. He understood the challenges his community faced—truancy, teenage pregnancy, and a lack of safe spaces for children. His initiatives provided a beacon of hope, creating a nurturing environment where families felt safe and children could thrive. Under his guidance, young people participated in national tournaments, enriching excursions, and weekend match days that instilled a sense of belonging and purpose.

As Billa’s efforts flourished, they began to resonate beyond the borders of La, attracting international interest, volunteers, and donations. Tragically, in 2016, we lost this remarkable leader. In the wake of his passing, partners Jordan and King Boateng from Akwaaba Volunteers stepped in, alongside Billa’s devoted widow, Madam Phillys, to honor his legacy and continue his vital work.

In 2017, Ekow Elliott, founder of Volta Sports, reached out to Jordan to explore ways to sustain Billa’s mission. Together, they named the initiative “Street to School,” blending sports and education to empower the community that Billa loved so deeply. That summer, Ekow and Leon Yemoh, our current S2S Director, traveled to Ghana, immersing themselves in Billa’s vision and laying the foundation for what would become a formal charity in both the UK and Ghana.

Today, S2S carries forward Billa’s spirit and unwavering dedication. We maintain strong ties with BFSA and BMMFLS, guided by the six pillars of impact that reflect Billa’s dream: to ensure that every disadvantaged youth has the chance to shine. We are honored to continue this journey, inspired by Billa’s legacy and the countless lives he touched.
